Sinus and Nasal Disorders

About Sinusitis

Sinusitis is an infection of the sinus cavities caused by bacteria. It usually is preceded by a cold, allergy attack, or irritation by environmental pollutants. Unlike a cold, or allergy, bacterial sinusitis requires a physician’s diagnosis and treatment with an antibiotic to cure the infection and prevent future complications.

When you have frequent sinusitis, or the infection lasts three months or more, it could be chronic sinusitis. Symptoms of chronic sinusitis may be less severe than those of acute; however, untreated chronic sinusitis can cause damage to the sinuses that sometimes requires surgery to repair. Sinus symptoms can usually be treated conservatively with medications and nasal rinses. In some cases, surgical treatment is required. While we offer traditional sinus surgery in the nearby surgery center as an outpatient (patients may return home the same day), we also are excited to be leaders in in-office sinus and nasal congestion treatments. We have been offering balloon sinus dilation (sinuplasty) in our office for several years. Click here to learn more about our in-office balloon sinus dilation.

About Nasal Obstruction

Nasal obstruction– one of the more common sinus and nasal disorders– is referred to the blockage within the nasal cavity that compromises breathing capabilities. Several factors can cause nasal obstruction including swelling of the nasal lining, deviated nasal septum, a foreign agent lodged in the nose, and more. Nasal obstruction can result to mouth breathing, decreased sense of smell and taste, and –for patients who have sleep apnea– it can prevent them from using their CPAP, significantly impacting your quality of life.

Our team’s mission is to provide the highest quality of ENT and Audiology care for all of our patients. Nasal Obstruction Treatments

Our certified providers can treat nasal obstruction during a clinic visit. Of course, your treatment will depend on the cause behind your specific case. Some other common causes include:

  • External nasal valve collapse
  • Internal nasal valve collapse
  • Narrowed pyriform aperture
  • Septal deviation
  • Turbinate hypertrophy

Sinus and Nasal Disorder Treatment Expectations

During your appointment, our providers will be able to determine which of the aforementioned is the cause behind the symptoms you may be experiencing and develop a customized treatment plan from there. Oftentimes medical treatment is sufficient, but in the event it may not be, we can develop a customized surgical treatment plan best for you. Many patients may be able to undergo these procedures under local anesthesia within our office. In other cases, patients may be required to have their nasal obstruction treated during a short outpatient procedure at a nearby surgery center.

Schedule Your Initial Appointment

If you believe you are experiencing nasal obstruction or a compromise in your breathing due to a sinus or nasal disorder, be sure to contact us today and schedule your appointment.
