You love your little ones and would stop at nothing to make sure they are happy and healthy. So it only makes sense that when a problem arises or something seems out of the ordinary, you want to get it checked out as soon as possible. Maybe your son is exhibiting signs of an ear infection. Or perhaps your daughter has a sore and swollen throat. These are both cases where visiting an ENT can be beneficial, if not downright essential. Our ENT pediatric services at Regional ENT Associates aim to help your children experience optimal health and wellness.
Addressing Ear Infections
An ear infection can happen to anyone, but children are especially at risk because their inner ear tubes are smaller and quickly fill up with excess fluid. Other factors like allergies can make matters even worse. Fortunately, there are treatments available for ear infections. The first line of defense is usually antibiotics. Lifestyle changes like avoiding allergens may also help. When these methods don’t work, ear tubes, or a myringotomy, can be placed to encourage airflow and keep the fluid from backing up in the middle of the ear.
Just like ear infections, children are also more susceptible to infections in the throat and breathing issues. One of the most well-known of these infections is tonsillitis. The tonsils are small lumps in the back of the throat and are part of lymphoid tissue, which tends to be larger in kids. When antibiotics don’t help, the tonsils may need to be taken out via a simple procedure called a tonsillectomy, during which the tonsil tissue is removed with or without the adenoids (another type of tissue).
